The Department of the House of Representatives, in partnership with Y Australia, has opened expressions of interest for the National Youth Parliament 2026. The program invites 16 and 17-year-olds from across the country to participate directly in Australia’s parliamentary and democratic system.

Over five days in Canberra, youth will take part in simulated parliamentary debates, policy workshops with political leaders, and hands-on exercises that mirror the drafting and debating of bills. The program will be hosted at both Parliament House and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House. All travel and accommodation costs are fully covered, ensuring access is not limited by financial means.

Voices of Support

Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honourable Milton Dick MP, emphasised the significance of the initiative, describing it as a priority in his role as Speaker. “The establishment and delivery of a National Youth Parliament program was a major priority for me as Speaker. I am proud to be giving young Australians a brand-new opportunity to learn about civics and our parliamentary system,” he said.

For Alexandra Ash, CEO of Y Australia, the partnership highlights the importance of not only preparing young people to vote but also equipping them to understand the impact of their choices. “We don’t just want young people to vote when they turn 18, we want them to understand why their vote matters, how decisions are made, and how they can influence them,” she explained.

Why It Matters

Research consistently shows that many young Australians are disengaged from traditional politics. Despite this, their interest in social and community issues remains strong. The program responds to a clear gap: civics education has received declining emphasis in schools, leaving many young people uncertain about how Parliament functions or how laws are made.

By offering practical experience, the National Youth Parliament provides a pathway to greater understanding. It aims to build confidence, knowledge, and skills that participants can take into adulthood as active citizens.

Access and Inclusion

Importantly, no prior political experience is required to apply. The program is open to any young Australian who will be aged 16 or 17 in August 2026 and who is curious about how democracy works. Covering travel and accommodation ensures students from all backgrounds, including regional and rural areas, can take part.

Looking Ahead

The National Youth Parliament 2026 is an investment in the future of Australia’s democracy. By allowing young Australians to step into the shoes of parliamentarians, the program helps bridge the gap between passion for issues and understanding of processes. Expressions of interest are now open through the program’s website.
